+ Sharing Christ with a Muslim: why Christ is good news

Christians are sent to share the good news with other people. Sometimes it takes practice before you are comfortable. Here are simple things that every Christian can do.

A Life of Love

Some have quipped: More people are drawn to Christ by saints than by theologians.

There is great power in showing Christ's love in our lives. Many ex-Muslims who become Christians mention a Christian who showed them love. Our good works do not save us, but as Christ said, "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matt 5:16) As sinners we often fail; as God's children, we still show his light. We can love those who hate us, share our possessions, welcome a stranger, graciously forgive. God's love leads us to know people, learn their needs, and seek ways to help.

When there is little chance to speak about Christ, show Christ in our lives. Our actions speak for us. When we do have a chance to speak about Christ, people will be more likely to listen if we have already earned their respect.

The Power of God's Word

A simple way to introduce someone to Christ is to share a Bible. Many are impressed by the power of Jesus' teachings. Muslims often have mixed feelings about the Bible. Mohammad spoke of Jesus as a prophet, saying his teaching was right. But most Muslims believe the Bible was corrupted, because in it Jesus does not foretell the coming of Mohammad-as Mohammad said he did. The Bible quotes of early Christian writers match our Bibles today, so we know the message is still the same.

Muslims consider Jesus a prophet and the messiah, which helps us introduce his teachings. Muslims are taught that the Qur'an confirms what Christ taught. Yet almost none of Christ's teachings are mentioned in the Qur'an. Open the Bible to some of Christ's teachings so they can see the difference with their own eyes. Introduce a teaching that has impressed you personally. Place a bookmark at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5) or the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 10). Another favorite among Muslims who come to Christ is, "Come to me, all you who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28). Islam gives little assurance of God's love and forgiveness. God's rest and peace through Christ are the good news that we share.

Prayer

God wants all to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. Before speaking to people about Christ, ask that God open their hearts and minds. Ask that this message change their lives. Ask that they know the comfort of Christ. When we pray, we can be confident that God hears us and welcomes this prayer, because we are praying that his will be done.
