Revvin Rev (Feb 13, 2007 7:51:36 PM)
What's the number one concern do you feel High school students have concerning a WELS college besides cost?
SemCardinal2007 (Feb 13, 2007 7:52:10 PM)
(This user has entered Preparing for College)
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 7:52:17 PM)
Does the college have the programs they're interested in.
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 7:52:46 PM)
Rev, I think that they are worried about the amount of opportunities they will be presented with.
Revvin Rev (Feb 13, 2007 7:53:05 PM)
Programs, as in extracurrulurs, or academic?
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 7:53:18 PM)
Rev, both.
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 7:53:33 PM)
Rev, I think most of them are presently surprised by the wide selection of majors and extra-curriculars that are available!
Revvin Rev (Feb 13, 2007 7:53:37 PM)
MLC, mostly academic?
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 7:54:08 PM)
No, also the athletics and extracurriculars.
Revvin Rev (Feb 13, 2007 7:54:13 PM)
Lucas, you have a handle on graduate with the major they started with?
Revvin Rev (Feb 13, 2007 7:54:42 PM)
on "how many" graduate...
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 7:55:47 PM)
Rev, I don't have specific numbers, but many will change directions and go with something that they gained interest in during college.

Robin (Feb 13, 2007 7:58:49 PM)
Hi
shea (Feb 13, 2007 7:58:54 PM)
What is the first step a student should take?
Moose (Feb 13, 2007 7:59:16 PM)
can someone help me to see the difference between mlc and wlc?
chatmaster (Feb 13, 2007 7:59:26 PM)
Bethany Lutheran College has a student population of over 570 supported by 75 faculty members.
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 7:59:51 PM)
Moose, yes, MLC is the College of Ministry for the WELS preparing young men and women to serve in the public ministry.
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 7:59:56 PM)
Shea, it's always good to visit a college. That's the best way for you to tell if you can get a feel for what the college is really like.
Moose (Feb 13, 2007 8:00:16 PM)
what's public ministry?
aliaschick559 (Feb 13, 2007 8:00:34 PM)
(This user has entered Preparing for College)
shea (Feb 13, 2007 8:00:35 PM)
What should I really be looking for? Besides seeing what they offer for classes
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:00:36 PM)
Moose, and WLC is a liberal arts college with a wide selection of programs that help to train students to be lay leaders in the church.
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:00:45 PM)
BLC on the other hand is a liberal arts institution designed to focus on other professions outside the public ministry
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:00:51 PM)
Moose, it is made up of the Pastors, teachers and staff ministers that are called by congregations and serve in those congregations.
SemCardinal2007 (Feb 13, 2007 8:00:59 PM)
are there any other options besides student loans to help pay for college? (I am heading to MLC next year, by the way)
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:01:23 PM)
shea, at Bethany we look to find a fit for you
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:01:24 PM)
Shea, talk to as many people that you can at the campus. I would recommend talking with students to get their perspective in particular.
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:01:36 PM)
a place that you will feel comfortable for the next 4 years
chatmaster (Feb 13, 2007 8:01:41 PM)

Moose (Feb 13, 2007 8:03:11 PM)

hello arnjeff
SemCardinal2007 (Feb 13, 2007 8:03:37 PM)
how many freshmen applicants are there for next year at MLC?
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:03:43 PM)
Cardinal, Once you have filled out your FAFSA and your MLC grant forms our financial aid department will put together your financial aid package. From there you can determine how much money you still need to pay for your first year of college.
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:03:50 PM)
Moose, I would recommend checking out our website at wlc.edu and you can see all of the majors.
shea (Feb 13, 2007 8:03:56 PM)
Do you think that in the first year you should know your major?
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:03:56 PM)
Cardinal, At the present around 200.
Moose (Feb 13, 2007 8:04:01 PM)
thanks
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:04:15 PM)
shea, that is not a problem to be undecided
Moose (Feb 13, 2007 8:04:26 PM)
i guess not
mustang9 (Feb 13, 2007 8:04:27 PM)
(This user has entered Preparing for College)
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:04:30 PM)
many students are and don't decide for a year or two
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:04:32 PM)
Moose, some of our larger programs include Business, Psychology, the Sciences, Political Science, Art, Music, etc.
SemCardinal2007 (Feb 13, 2007 8:04:47 PM)
Would an MLC Grant form be available at MLS at all or would I have to have one mailed?
shea (Feb 13, 2007 8:05:14 PM)
How many years can you take of just general ed classes before you have to choose a major?
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:05:36 PM)
Cardinal...the MLC grant form was included in a financial aid mailing that went out last week and was sent to your home.
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:05:38 PM)
shea, most students at Bethany complete general courses in about 4 semesters
aliaschick559 (Feb 13, 2007 8:05:49 PM)
What does MLC base its financial aid on?
SemCardinal2007 (Feb 13, 2007 8:06:02 PM)
i c- we have been on break at Sem and I am just getting my mail......
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:06:07 PM)
some classes that meet general requirments will meet major requirments as well
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:06:20 PM)
Alias....it is based on the results of your FAFSA which is derived from family income.
mustang9 (Feb 13, 2007 8:06:23 PM)
Is there a preferred type of computer that you need if I plan on attending WLC? Is any computer with Vista or a Mac preffered?
shea (Feb 13, 2007 8:06:33 PM)
Estelle- what percent of students do you think come in the first year with no major and does this make is harder to decide on where to go to school?
chatmaster (Feb 13, 2007 8:06:40 PM)
Bethany Lutheran College offers 17 majors including biology, business administration, chemistry, music, communications, education, english, history, psychology, theatre and more.
aliaschick559 (Feb 13, 2007 8:06:55 PM)
then do you suggest that the FASFA be filled out by?
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:07:00 PM)
I would say at Bethany we get about 50% that are somewhat undecided
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:07:06 PM)
Mustang, you could bring pretty much anything that you prefer. We have both Dells and Macs in our computer labs.
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:07:06 PM)

MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:07:13 PM)
Alias...as soon as your parents file their income tax returns.
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:07:32 PM)
Moose....we're fine, up and running and the future looks great.
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:07:42 PM)
Shea, I don't think it has to make it harder
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:08:01 PM)
you just have to find a place that you are comfortable and where you feel you can try different things
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:08:12 PM)
until you find what is best for you

Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:08:27 PM)
Mustang, I'm not too sure about Vista yet, but if you have something with XP, I would recommend the Professional version as you would be on the school's network - better for security.
chatmaster (Feb 13, 2007 8:08:48 PM)
Wisconsin Lutheran College offers 20 majors including art, music, chemistry, biology, mathematics, psychology, education, theology, business economics, communications, theatre and more.

I was up at MLC about a year ago and I know that cable television is included in the fees and everything. Is the phone service long distance and is there internet hookup in each individual dorm room?
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:09:29 PM)
Moose - the chatmaster just listed a bunch of our majors, too. Thanks, chatmaster! :)
mustang9 (Feb 13, 2007 8:09:30 PM)
that's what I've heard, so i didn't know if we needed any special type or if one kind works better than the other on the school network
Moose (Feb 13, 2007 8:09:44 PM)
i saw it....great!
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:10:09 PM)
Cardinal.. students purchase their own cable. Phone service is available, but you pay for your own long distance. Yes, there are network hookups in each room.
chatmaster (Feb 13, 2007 8:10:13 PM)

moose (Feb 13, 2007 8:10:56 PM)
what's the difference between bethany and wlc...they look similar as far as majors
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:11:08 PM)

BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:12:20 PM)
and as you saw our student body is a little smaller
jo (Feb 13, 2007 8:12:53 PM)

Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:21:41 PM)
Mustang, we offer 4 selections for underclassmen and 5 for seniors. They are available as block plans (a certain number per semester) or a plan that includes every meal during the week.

MyDaughterLikesPuppies (Feb 13, 2007 8:22:31 PM)
AT what point should we seriously think about a campus visit. Our son is a Jr this year.
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:22:42 PM)
O-once you reach upper division study classes can be as small as 5-10 in general course lectures are larger generally around 30 with labs at about 12-16
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:22:43 PM)
Alias.....You have a major in Elementary Education and in your secondary subject area.
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:23:02 PM)
0, it varies depending on the level of the course and the course content. Many are smaller, as our labs are designed to hold a limited amount of students.
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:23:27 PM)
0, this allows for one-on-one work with the Prof. and extensive research and lab work for each student.
aliaschick559 (Feb 13, 2007 8:23:39 PM)
MLC, what exactly are concentrations? The way they have been explained to me is that they are like an unofficial minor.
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:24:25 PM)
Alias......Concentrations are now called emphasis courses. It is somewhat like a minor, but it is only 9 credits in seven different areas of interest.
chatmaster2 (Feb 13, 2007 8:24:30 PM)

MyDaughterLikesPuppies (Feb 13, 2007 8:25:02 PM)
Is there a demand in any particular area of emphasis that the synod can see having a higher demand than others?
aliaschick559 (Feb 13, 2007 8:25:32 PM)
MLC, does that mean that you have 7 different concentrations or only one?
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:26:00 PM)
that is why we have a cadaver lab for our upper division anatomy students
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:26:02 PM)

Moose (Feb 13, 2007 8:26:15 PM)

aliaschick559 (Feb 13, 2007 8:26:21 PM)
Okay, you kind of scared me for a moment there.
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:27:01 PM)
O- yes, we will help you search out a job or graduate program that fits your goals
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:27:06 PM)
My daughter....as far as the synod is concerned, I don't think they value one over the other
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:27:18 PM)
0, we just built an entire building dedicated to the Sciences. The professors and students have been using it to do some pretty incredible things! We also frequently team up with the Milwaukee Medical College across the street for some awesome experiences!
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:28:10 PM)

Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:29:38 PM)
0, yes. Since the college is so small, our professors will include students in on research projects. A handful of our student have had articles published as an undergrad!
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:29:46 PM)
O-yes students have the opportunity to get involved research projects
0 (Feb 13, 2007 8:30:13 PM)
What sort of stuff do the profs work on?
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:30:26 PM)
0, our profs have also applied for and received some pretty hefty grants which students were included in on the research.
arnjeff (Feb 13, 2007 8:30:31 PM)
MLC, is there a standard course selection for freshmen, versus electives (or emphasis areas) to choose from?
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:30:57 PM)
Arnjeff....Yes, your emphasis electives begin in your second year.
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:31:05 PM)
students are also encouraged to do their own research
mustang9 (Feb 13, 2007 8:31:25 PM)
do u think that a WLC degree stacks up to those from Marquette or Madison or any other more well known school?
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:32:11 PM)
0, our Physics prof, Dr. Kerry Kuehn is currently working on this research: http://faculty.wlc.edu/kuehn/Research/Research.html
Chatmaster (Feb 13, 2007 8:33:05 PM)
Martin Luther College has financial aid available for students. For more information, visit www.mlc-wels.edu/home/administration/offices/finaid
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:33:12 PM)
Mustang, I would agree with that. Many times, a student graduating from WLC will have a much more impressive resume than someone at a larger school like that.
aliaschick559 (Feb 13, 2007 8:33:42 PM)
MLC, what should I do now to prepare myself for MLC, seeing as I'm a junior and I have already visited campus?
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:34:00 PM)
Mustang, the small atmosphere allows for our students to have access to internships and activities that wouldn't be possible at Marquette or Madison.
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:34:41 PM)
Mustang, in Milwaukee in particular, WLC has a VERY good reputation with many businesses and organizations. Many students get some pretty high profile internships and even careers upon graduation.
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:34:46 PM)
My daughter.....Having a teaching degree not from MLC does not exclude you from teaching in one of our highschools but you would have to gain synod certification to receive a permanent call.
mustang9 (Feb 13, 2007 8:35:05 PM)
WLC, Do students have to wait until junior or senior year to be internships?
MyDaughterLikesPuppies (Feb 13, 2007 8:35:20 PM)
And that certification comes from MLC...
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:35:47 PM)
Alias....continue taking college prep courses in high school. Talk with our admissions counselors. Make a vist to MLC in the fall of your senior year. Fill out an application at the beginning of your senior year.
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:35:49 PM)
Mustang, they do not have to wait that long. You can start doing internships at any point in your college career. My wife, for example, did one in her sophomore, junior, and senior years.
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:35:55 PM)
My daughter.....yes.
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:36:17 PM)
Mustang, internships are one of the best ways to help you decide if you actually like a certain line of work.
MyDaughterLikesPuppies (Feb 13, 2007 8:36:45 PM)
So at what point do we start to apply for financial aid?
mustang9 (Feb 13, 2007 8:37:05 PM)
Do all internships count for credits then?
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:37:08 PM)
My daughter.....At MLC it would be after you're accepted.
MyDaughterLikesPuppies (Feb 13, 2007 8:38:06 PM)
So...if my son applies in August, how long does the admissions process take?
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:38:08 PM)
Mustang, some internships will. Many programs require at least three credits of an internship. You can also choose to do them on your own. For example, some will do a paid internship over the summer as their summer job.
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:38:24 PM)
My daughter.....MLC starts processing applications the middle of September.
Moose (Feb 13, 2007 8:38:31 PM)
if someone goes to mlc and does not get an assignment, what can they do for work?
aliaschick559 (Feb 13, 2007 8:38:40 PM)
MLC, seeing as I'm planning on being a STEP History, should I take more history electives if I have open space in my senior schedule?
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:39:00 PM)
Moose.....they have State licensure for elementary education and they can teach in the public system.
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:39:16 PM)
Alias.....definitely.

Prof Keahn's research looks cool. Can you major in physics at WLC?
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:40:08 PM)
0, currently Physics is just a minor.
Moose (Feb 13, 2007 8:40:53 PM)
where do teacher grads from Bethany end up?
arnjeff (Feb 13, 2007 8:41:05 PM)
MLC, what is the typical credit load for freshmen, and what are options for jobs. What is the best way to find out what's available on-campus?
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:41:37 PM)
In a variety of places, we have students in public schools and private schools around the country
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:42:05 PM)
Arnjeff...the typical credit load is around 17 credits per semester. We employ several students on campus. Check out the Financial Aid website for available jobs.
aliaschick559 (Feb 13, 2007 8:42:14 PM)
MLC, when being placed for a call, does the assignment committee consider class rank and GPA when placing graduates in either high school or grade school?
Moose (Feb 13, 2007 8:42:17 PM)
Do many of them teach in ELS schools?
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:42:39 PM)
Moose--yes some of them do
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:42:52 PM)
Alias....not really. They look more at your gifts and talents and where they think you can best serve with these gifts and talents.
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:43:57 PM)

about how many biology and chemistry majors graduate from WLC & BLC each year?
Moose (Feb 13, 2007 8:45:01 PM)
This is a goof question, I know, but what is the guy to girl ratio at each college
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:45:12 PM)
o-I believe this year we will have about 20 between each
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:45:16 PM)

but I would have to check current lists to find out for sure
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:46:07 PM)
0, I don't have exact numbers for you. Sorry about that! I can look into it for you, though.
BLC_Estelle (Feb 13, 2007 8:46:41 PM)
moose at BLC we have 45%men 55% women
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:47:16 PM)

MLC, what do you believe the benefit is in going to MLC for a degree in education versus a different secular college?
mustang9 (Feb 13, 2007 8:49:54 PM)
WLC, how many students with a major, and possibly a minor (percentage wise) graduate in 4 years?
Warriorsfan (Feb 13, 2007 8:49:56 PM)
(This user has entered Preparing for College)
MLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:50:34 PM)
Alias....At MLC you are trained for the teaching ministry....whereas at a secular college you are trained to teach in the public school system and since we train for ministry that is what the atmosphere of our classes and the campus family is all about.
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:50:36 PM)
Mustang, most of our students are able to do this in four years. The one progam that would be an exception would be our education students. They can plan on 4.5-5 years.
mustang9 (Feb 13, 2007 8:51:05 PM)

Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:54:18 PM)
Warriorsfan, we also have more work that we wanted to do on the Atheltic Complex which will include a permanent building with offices, locker rooms, weight rooms, restrooms, etc.

Moose...some sports are more competitive than others. Since it appears that you like football, everybody dresses for home games and there is a selection for players to go to away games. Your sports with fewer participants like basketball for instance is quite competitive to make the team.
Moose (Feb 13, 2007 8:55:03 PM)
ok
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:55:12 PM)
Moose, being a smaller school it enables students to get involved in sports.

Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:56:02 PM)
Moose, our situation is similar to MLC's with our athletics. Some sports are more competitive for roster spots than others.

aliaschick559 (Feb 13, 2007 8:56:54 PM)
MLC, like to learn various things about technology that can't necessarily be learned in the classroom...does that make senes now?
Warriorsfan (Feb 13, 2007 8:57:35 PM)
Interesting. I'll have to check it out further.
Lucas Faust/WLC (Feb 13, 2007 8:57:35 PM)
