Well, what do want to know.
maestro (Jan 22, 2008 9:15:39 PM)
pastor Rich, WHERE are summer trips available for this summer?
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:15:43 PM)
Did you do it with Kim rachgreiner?
Ilikecow..mooo (Jan 22, 2008 9:15:50 PM)
idk what we are supposed to talk about
maestro (Jan 22, 2008 9:15:53 PM)
and what kind of activity do they involve?
chatmaster (Jan 22, 2008 9:15:55 PM)
Nicole is a high school junior that is very active in her congregation, helping with Sunday school, VBS, regularly participating in youth group activities and Bible study, and more. She has been on several mission trips in Florida, assisting with canvassing and VBS teaching. She is also a teen member of the 2009 WELS International Youth Rally Planning Committee.
finn1016 (Jan 22, 2008 9:16:10 PM)

Laura (Jan 22, 2008 9:16:24 PM)
FLORIDA!!!!
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:16:35 PM)
Maestro, They are all listed on the WELS Kingdom Workers website at www.welskingdomworkers.org Check until "getting involved". You will see about 40 opps for this summer still not filled.
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:16:38 PM)
They had two TCWs/VBS last summer?
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:16:44 PM)
are those of you who are going on trips going on canvassing trips or the 10 week mma trips?
Andrew (Jan 22, 2008 9:17:03 PM)
10 week trip
nicole (Jan 22, 2008 9:17:06 PM)
canvassing i guess
Ilikecow..mooo (Jan 22, 2008 9:17:06 PM)
so are we diciding on trips?
sarasmile (Jan 22, 2008 9:17:09 PM)
what do you do on the trips?
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:17:14 PM)
Ali, we went over Christmas break:)
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:17:19 PM)
sarasmile,
Ilikecow..mooo (Jan 22, 2008 9:17:26 PM)
y would we do this?
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:17:29 PM)
When you see an opportunity you might like to get involved in, simply fill out a Faith IN Action volunteer app and send it in with a group of apps.
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:17:30 PM)
i did a 10 week summer trip and helped with a summer day camp for kids
Mac (Jan 22, 2008 9:17:34 PM)
who is the person giving all the info for this chat?
maestro (Jan 22, 2008 9:17:38 PM)
so
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:18:04 PM)
If you are in high school, you will need a chaperone to join you. You will probably have to down load the volunteer apps and send them in with parent signatures.
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:18:08 PM)
sarasmile, it depends on the trip usually you do door to door canvassing and each VBS in the summer
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:18:11 PM)
I see.
chatmaster (Jan 22, 2008 9:18:13 PM)
Katie graduated from college in 2006 with a major in Communications. She has been on two mission trips, one to help gut homes in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and one to California to help with a summer day camp for 10 weeks. She enjoys traveling, playing sports, reading, watching movies, and spending time with family and friends. She would like to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) abroad for a year. She also currently volunteers as a youth mentor at her church.
maestro (Jan 22, 2008 9:18:18 PM)
Pastor Rich, if a teen on this chat wanted to get involved, should they talk to their pastor, or contact Faith in Action directly?
sarasmile (Jan 22, 2008 9:18:21 PM)
sorry, what is canvasing?
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:18:24 PM)
Ali, great!
Ilikecow..mooo (Jan 22, 2008 9:18:43 PM)
kim
maestro (Jan 22, 2008 9:18:51 PM)
sarasmile, cavassing can be a variety of things
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:18:51 PM)
sarasmile, canvassing is where you help a church promote their existence
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:18:58 PM)
sarasmile, it's when you go door to door sharing info about the church you're helping with the neighborhood
maestro (Jan 22, 2008 9:19:10 PM)
sometimes canvassing is just dropping off a flyer on a doorstep
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:19:13 PM)
Usually with canvasing you go door to door and hand out flyers or ask survey questions.
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:19:24 PM)
I would advise contacting their youth group or a group of students from a local Lutheran high school. Contact their pastor as a possible chaperone or parent, a graduate from their high school, or anyone WELS that would be over the age of 18
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:19:24 PM)
It's a great way to lose weight and serve God!
sarasmile (Jan 22, 2008 9:19:27 PM)
do you have to know about Bible studies with people?
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:19:27 PM)
sarasmile, you can go door to door, help send out flyers and stuff, help with vbs, do follow up visits with people who are interested in the congregation, etc.
chatmaster (Jan 22, 2008 9:19:44 PM)
Rachel graduated from college in 2008 with majors in Art and Elementary Education. She has been on numerous mission trips to several locations including California, Texas, Alaska, South Carolina, and Canada. She served as mission trip coordinator for her college for the 05/06 and 06/07 school years and was also very active on campus and throughout the United States with pro-life issues. She enjoys traveling, doing art, and spending time with friends and family.
Ilikecow..mooo (Jan 22, 2008 9:19:51 PM)
WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT???
Mac (Jan 22, 2008 9:19:51 PM)
I think its more like survey work
maestro (Jan 22, 2008 9:19:53 PM)
sarasmile, it really depends on what the local congregation needs help with
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:19:54 PM)
Opportunities are given out on a first come, first serve basis.
finn1016 (Jan 22, 2008 9:20:04 PM)
I'm not much of a people person...... any pppertunitys for me?
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:20:13 PM)
sarasmile, you don't have to lead bible studies, you just have to be willing to say you're with whatever church you're helping and answer questions they have
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:20:15 PM)
Each mission requests a group and submits a ministry plan.
nicole (Jan 22, 2008 9:20:15 PM)
sometimes we just hang flyers ont eh door
finn1016 (Jan 22, 2008 9:20:18 PM)
oppertunity*
Ilikecow..mooo (Jan 22, 2008 9:20:26 PM)
hi
nicole (Jan 22, 2008 9:20:26 PM)
or you can become a people person =)
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:20:30 PM)
So, Pastor, is the Kingdowm Worker Website up-to-date? Because I looked into some of those opportunities a month ago and Pastor Boeder said most of them are filled. :(
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:20:39 PM)
but sarasmile, each opportunity is different in that each congragation has unique needs and goals
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:20:43 PM)
That ministry plan could involve canvassing, vbs, sports camp work, music camp, etc.
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:21:01 PM)
Every volunteer should feel comfortable sharing their faith with strangers.
finn1016 (Jan 22, 2008 9:21:03 PM)
It'd be tough...
Laura (Jan 22, 2008 9:21:06 PM)
if anybody has questions ask me!
sarasmile (Jan 22, 2008 9:21:22 PM)
laura, who pays for these trips?
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:21:26 PM)
WELS Kingdom Workers will also offer training to prepare you for your trip.
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:21:41 PM)
finn, what would help your group get motivated to do this?
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:21:42 PM)
Your will also be trained by the lost host mission.
finn1016 (Jan 22, 2008 9:21:52 PM)
you've got me....
Laura (Jan 22, 2008 9:21:53 PM)
wels kingdom workers will pay
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:21:54 PM)
Who pays? That's important to understand
Laura (Jan 22, 2008 9:22:00 PM)
and the church will serve you meals
Mac (Jan 22, 2008 9:22:00 PM)
Can a group of my friends go from my church?
chatmaster (Jan 22, 2008 9:22:13 PM)
Learn about all the mission opportunities available through FIA and how to contact them at: http://www.wels.net/cgi-bin/site.pl?2617&collectionID=1071&contentID=11302&shortcutID=13329
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:22:15 PM)
Yes, definetly Mac.
Andrew (Jan 22, 2008 9:22:27 PM)
For anyone who has been on an MMA trip, did you have an outside part time job, and if so, how much time did you spend on that opposed to evangelism and church work?
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:22:31 PM)
Private donations are sent to WKW. They are matched 100 % so that we can sent volunteers on mission trips.
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:22:32 PM)
finn, would you be willing to go somewhere with people you don't know all that well?
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:22:51 PM)
Ali, Yes the website has been updated as of last Friday.
finn1016 (Jan 22, 2008 9:22:53 PM)
Depending on the time frame sure
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:22:57 PM)
Thanks!
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:23:00 PM)
andrew, i did not have a pt job because on my mma trip, i worked for the camp 40 hours a week
sarasmile (Jan 22, 2008 9:23:13 PM)
how old do you have to be?
finn1016 (Jan 22, 2008 9:23:20 PM)
I could get a friend or my brother to come with me
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:23:25 PM)
You will see opportunities available for one or two weeks most often. The ten week opportunities are really set aside for college students.
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:23:33 PM)
finn, have you looked at the opportunities on the kingdom workers website to see where you might like to go and what you might like to do?
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:23:37 PM)
Yes, you could get a friend or brother to join you
chatmaster (Jan 22, 2008 9:23:40 PM)
Contact Faith In Action at fia@wkw.wels.net or speak to your youth leader/pastor about mission opportunities.
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:23:51 PM)
it gives a small description of what you'd be doing. maybe you could share that with your group?
maestro (Jan 22, 2008 9:24:05 PM)
anybody have some fun or exciting stories to share from mission trips?
finn1016 (Jan 22, 2008 9:24:11 PM)

katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:24:48 PM)

AJ (Jan 22, 2008 9:26:33 PM)

Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:26:43 PM)
Foreign opps are set aside for college students or older because they demand a minimum of a year commitment
Mac (Jan 22, 2008 9:26:47 PM)

Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:28:50 PM)
Yes, mission opps are good opps to witness your faith to others who do not know Jesus the way you do
Mac (Jan 22, 2008 9:28:51 PM)

katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:29:03 PM)

sarasmile (Jan 22, 2008 9:30:07 PM)
Do i have to have my pastor knwo?
nicole (Jan 22, 2008 9:30:10 PM)

finn1016 (Jan 22, 2008 9:30:22 PM)

nicole (Jan 22, 2008 9:30:32 PM)

Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:31:47 PM)
We had a week of canvassing and a week of VBS. In the hot desert heat we distributed about 2,000 flyers for our VBS. Of those, only one family actually responded to it. So, it was TOTALLY worth it! It was a lady who was the foster mother from her 5 nieces and nephews (ages 3-8). Their parents were in jail because of selling meth - and these kids were living on the streets, digging in garbage cans. It was such as sad story! Well, Courtney, the oldest kept seeing signs for Vacation Bible School at churches and she was just begging her aunt to go. But she couldn't because all of them took place in the day time. Ours however was at night time. When they got to the door, they saw the flyer for our VBS and Courtney jumped up and down she was so excited! "We can go! We can go!" She said. The whole gang came -- and I had Courtney in my class. I got to share God's word with her for the first time EVER and she soaked it up with an eager heart! Her birthday was that week and I gave her a Bible. Pastor tells me the fam
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:31:51 PM)

rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:37:53 PM)
ditka, souvenirs i meant:)
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:37:59 PM)
On Jan. 2, there were 147 opps on the WKW website. Now, there are about 45. They are filled quickly.
Ditka (Jan 22, 2008 9:38:05 PM)
I figured that
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:38:11 PM)
lol great!
Allison (Jan 22, 2008 9:38:13 PM)
Pastor Rich, how old do you have to be to act as a chaperone?
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:38:15 PM)
We don't feed them all. The host congregations do.
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:38:21 PM)
pastor rich, for some of the 1 week trips, could i take a hs student with me?
sarasmile (Jan 22, 2008 9:38:29 PM)
well, thats good Pastor
Laura (Jan 22, 2008 9:38:39 PM)
i wish i could do them all summer long. but unfortunately school has to get paid for but thats how much fun they are.
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:38:44 PM)
Allison, chaperone must be out of high school and receive a pastor's recommendation.
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:39:21 PM)
so if i get a pastor's recommendation, i could be a chaperone?
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:39:31 PM)
We would expect that a chaperone would be a mature, responsible Christian man or woman.
Allison (Jan 22, 2008 9:39:43 PM)
does that describe you katie?
chatmaster (Jan 22, 2008 9:39:44 PM)

Mac, it's a lot of fun!
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:41:28 PM)
Pastor - is the MMA for Corona, CA still open?
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:41:33 PM)
it's really fun to speak to groups because they're very curious about what you have to say and are eager to hear what you've done
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:41:40 PM)
Mac, we also ask that volunteers write stories about their mission experiences and send in pictures so that we can put them in our magizines and on the website.
sarasmile (Jan 22, 2008 9:41:44 PM)
Who did this already that's on the chat?
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:41:49 PM)

Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:47:30 PM)
As in, do you know someone who is interested, or just that it will probably get filled soon?
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:47:41 PM)
Laura, that's not fair its been pretty cold here in Milwaukee
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:47:50 PM)

bummer...
sarasmile (Jan 22, 2008 9:47:51 PM)

maestro (Jan 22, 2008 9:48:58 PM)
sarasmile, i was on a mission trip (not sponsored by Faith in Action) in which we sorted toys for the congregation because they were a Toys for Tots distributor
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:49:00 PM)
Sarasmile, We can only offer what comes in to us from the field. If they ask for it, we will try to help them by sending in volunteers.
Andrew (Jan 22, 2008 9:49:21 PM)
I am very eager to talk with people that have not heard much about Christ
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:49:34 PM)
Mac, sort of although I think you have to be older unless it's the New Orleans trip
Andrew (Jan 22, 2008 9:49:37 PM)
I am fairly sheltered you could say and I cannot wait to get out and spread God's Word
sarasmile (Jan 22, 2008 9:49:42 PM)

rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:49:50 PM)
Pastor Rich how old do you have to be to do builders?
Andrew (Jan 22, 2008 9:50:10 PM)

Laura (Jan 22, 2008 9:50:30 PM)
andrew im jealous ! its going to be so exciting !
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:50:38 PM)
rachgreiner: High school students on up can volunteer. Most often, retired people volunteer for Builders
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:50:52 PM)
sarasmile, I look forward to working with you.
Bryan (Jan 22, 2008 9:51:06 PM)
(This user has entered What are you doing this summer? Discussing Teen Summer Mission Trips)
nicole (Jan 22, 2008 9:51:09 PM)
hi bryan
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:51:12 PM)
hi Bryan!
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:51:19 PM)
Hey, bryan
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:51:22 PM)
Hi Bryan :)
Mac (Jan 22, 2008 9:51:25 PM)
Who pays for all the BFC materials and tools?
Bryan (Jan 22, 2008 9:51:30 PM)
hey room
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:51:34 PM)
pastor rich, what kind of opportunities are there for someone like me who's done with school?
Bryan (Jan 22, 2008 9:51:44 PM)
what are we talking about in here?
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:51:47 PM)
BFC has everything they need. They have been around for over 20 years.
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:51:47 PM)
yeah pastor rich me too!
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:51:58 PM)
Bryan -- pretty much whatever you want!
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:52:11 PM)
Chatmaster, could you answer Bryan's question.
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:52:11 PM)
Bryan, we're talking about what mission trips we've done and what they're like
Bryan (Jan 22, 2008 9:52:20 PM)
I want to do a mission trip, but how do I do it
nicole (Jan 22, 2008 9:52:24 PM)
bryan, are you interested?
Andrew (Jan 22, 2008 9:52:25 PM)
To people who haven't every gone on a trip it seems odd that for all the people that you canvass you only might get a few people at the most to respond, but that must just be an awesome joy once you have experienced dealing with people who haven't heard the good news
Bryan (Jan 22, 2008 9:52:31 PM)
yes very
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:52:54 PM)
Andrew - it sounds like you really have a heart of ministry. How come you don't want to go to MLC?
Mac (Jan 22, 2008 9:53:01 PM)
Bryan its about voluteering
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:53:05 PM)
Bryan, go to the WELS Kingdom Workers website.
AJ (Jan 22, 2008 9:53:11 PM)
mlc is horrible go to wlc or blc
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:53:14 PM)
Alison, could you help Bryan out
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:53:18 PM)
Andrew the wild thing is that we can't see how the Holy Spirit is working. Sometimes it might take a year for someone we visited to go to the church:)
Laura (Jan 22, 2008 9:53:28 PM)
as far as canvasing goes. both experiences i have done i done door hangers and there a lot more ground covered and more people respond
Laura (Jan 22, 2008 9:53:37 PM)
AJ!
maestro (Jan 22, 2008 9:53:43 PM)
aj, mlc isn't all that bad, just different focus from wlc or blc
Allison (Jan 22, 2008 9:53:44 PM)
Bryan, is do you have a staff minister or pastor who organizes trips at your church?
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:53:47 PM)
ali, some people have a heart of service but have different spiritual gifts than teachers. it's a blessing there are people in each group!
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:53:58 PM)
Bryan, go to the WELS Kingdom Workers website at www.welskingdomworkers.org to find out everything about WKW
Bryan (Jan 22, 2008 9:54:08 PM)
no, we don't take trips at my church
Bryan (Jan 22, 2008 9:54:19 PM)
thanks pastor
Andrew (Jan 22, 2008 9:54:22 PM)
I actually battled for awhile as to whether or not I wanted to go to MLC or WLC, and I finally just felt I wanted to go to WLC
Allison (Jan 22, 2008 9:54:31 PM)
ok, then like Pastor Rich said, there are some opportunities on the website.
finn1016 (Jan 22, 2008 9:54:35 PM)
bryan if you don't mind me asking where are you located?
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:54:38 PM)
Bryan, are you a student at a WELS High school
AJ (Jan 22, 2008 9:54:41 PM)
BLC is where i am going?
Mac (Jan 22, 2008 9:54:53 PM)

maestro (Jan 22, 2008 9:54:54 PM)

AJ (Jan 22, 2008 9:56:13 PM)

unfortunatly I will not be there
Mac (Jan 22, 2008 9:56:25 PM)

Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:58:18 PM)

Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:58:21 PM)
Ali, yes!!!
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 9:58:31 PM)

that would be awesome
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:58:37 PM)

rach DEFINITELY!!!
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:59:05 PM)

Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:59:17 PM)
am just saying, I talked with all of those guys about AFRICA.
Andrew (Jan 22, 2008 9:59:26 PM)
I have one question....again it's not necessarily nervousness I guess, but for those who have gone on trips, did you prepare a certain way before each time out canvassing, etc.? such as prayers, bible reading? just curious
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 9:59:28 PM)
africa would be cool
maestro (Jan 22, 2008 9:59:44 PM)
Andrew...definitely pray about it
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 9:59:45 PM)
AJ, Yes
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 9:59:55 PM)
And they're going to put in their proposed budgets in April to have like 4 MLC students come and do VBS down there for a week.
AJ (Jan 22, 2008 10:00:08 PM)
I hope he doesn't take my spot.
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 10:00:13 PM)
Andew, usually pastor strobel and I did a meeting to help get people informed and give some practice:)
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 10:00:17 PM)
Maestro, If you feel the need for training, just let me know.
Andrew (Jan 22, 2008 10:00:31 PM)
Yes, Pastor Strobel hasn't quite talked with me yet
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 10:00:36 PM)
Andrew, at the church the pastor should explain things too
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 10:00:44 PM)
Andrew - don't worry! :) The holy spirit will give you the words. It's HIS ministry, and you're his tool.
Andrew (Jan 22, 2008 10:00:46 PM)
ok
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 10:00:53 PM)

maestro (Jan 22, 2008 10:00:58 PM)
good thing to keep in mind Ali
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 10:01:14 PM)

Bryan (Jan 22, 2008 10:01:35 PM)
ttyl
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 10:01:37 PM)
At the same time, there is something refreshing about telling Gods word to people who have NEVER heard it. Instead of people who know the message of the gospel and just don't care.
Andrew (Jan 22, 2008 10:01:38 PM)
well, unfortunately nicole, I don't really have much of a town....lol
Ali German (Jan 22, 2008 10:01:45 PM)
Bye Bryan
Pastor Rich (Jan 22, 2008 10:01:46 PM)
I am convinced that any of you can share the hope you have in your hearts with people who do not know Jesus the way we do. You can have an impact in peoples' hearts.
Andrew (Jan 22, 2008 10:01:51 PM)
rach, that would be awesome!
rachgreiner (Jan 22, 2008 10:02:02 PM)
no problem hun!
katieh (Jan 22, 2008 10:02:06 PM)
trust me, sometimes you have a huge impact and don't know it until later
