Our Greatest Friend
READ: Titus 3:4-7
Roy thought he had absolutely no reason to live. His grades were low, he rarely had any money, he had no life outside of his house, and worst of all, he seemed to have no friends. It had not always been this way. He once had many friends; friends that he trusted; friends that he could talk to and turn to for help. Then, however, rumors started. He began hearing his name mentioned in gossip throughout school. When he asked where the awful comments were coming from, he was absolutely shocked to find out that his own friends were the sources of the ugly gossip. He had been betrayed.
Many people, young and old, have the same experience as Roy. Sometimes we feel as if all have given up on us. If our friends are the ones who betray us, it is a much worse feeling.
We have to have some hope, however, and what better place to find it than in the Bible. Paul states in Titus 3:4-5, “But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.”
What better friend could we ever find on this earth? Jesus was able to look over our imperfections, and saved our lives eternally through the giving of his own life. Jesus doesn’t spread rumors about us, He is always there for us, and He will never let us fall from His grasp.
Fellow human friends are great to have. Some of us have many friends which we prize. Others have only one or two, but they are sinful human beings too, and they make sinful mistakes. However, we should never forget our greatest friend, Jesus, who is always with us and will never leave us.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: What can you trust in your human friends for? What can you trust in your friend, Jesus, for? How has Jesus shown His universal friendship?
PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Give thanks that Jesus is there for everyone at all times. Pray for help for those people who have lost close friends, whether it be through betrayal or a general falling away. Pray that they know Jesus is their ultimate friend.
