Why Obey?
READ: Hebrews 12:18-24
Finally, Friday night was here and the big good-bye party for seniors was in two hours. Toni was in her room deciding what she was going to wear when she glanced at a picture of her mother on her dresser. Her mother had told her she couldn’t go to the party because she had her ACT test in the morning. Toni really wanted to go to the party, so she decided she was going to sneak out. As Toni was brushing her hair, she thought of how much trouble she would get in and how badly she might do on the test. She decided to stay home.
Sometimes our parents tell us to do things and a lot of times we disobey them. We may think that they don’t want us to have any fun or they’re treating us like we’re four years old. God tells us that all those who keep commands will be saved and those that don’t will be punished. (Hebrews 12:18-24)
So, the next time our parents won’t let us do something, or we’re being punished for something, remember they’re not doing it because they don’t trust us, they’re doing it completely out of love.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: When you disobey God or your parents, do you ask for forgiveness? Why is it important that we obey our parents? How would you handle the situation Toni was in?
PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Ask God to help us resist disobeying our parents. Thank God for His unconditional love. Praise God for the things He has done for you.
