It's All Worn Out

READ: Isaiah 51: 4-8

When I was little my aunt brought me back a very special gift from Hawaii. It was a beautiful sundress and from the moment I received it, I loved it. Whenever I wore it with all my favorite jewelry I felt like a beautiful princess. Every time there was a reason to dress up, I couldn't wait to bring it out and wear it all over. But as time went on, the once bright yellow sundress began to look faded and worn. Eventually, it became so old-looking that it was barely a shadow of the wonderful gift it had once been.

God has given us a beautiful gift, too. But unlike the physical gift of the dress, his gift shall last forever. In the passage Isaiah 51:6, God speaks, "Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants die like flies. But my salvation will last forever, my righteousness will never fail." With these words, God is explaining that no matter what happens in this world his promises and salvation will last forever. Many times we place too much trust in things that will sooner than later fade away. Just like the dress that wore out all too easily, so also do the fake promises and temptations of this world wear out. We are reminded of God's wonders each and every day through the study of his Word and through prayer.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: What does God's promise of salvation mean to you?  How does this text give you comfort in times of trouble?  When do you feel you need to be reminded of his comfort most?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS:  Thank God for some of his wonderful promises he has kept for you. Pray for people who still put their trust in earthly items.  Ask God to always remind you of his promises for you.
