Living Water

READ: John 4:5-26
Have you ever worked outside on a hot day, helping your parents by mowing the lawn, moving some heavy rocks or weeding the garden? You get really thirsty working so you go inside to get a drink of water. And before you know it, you have drunk two glasses of water.
When Jesus came to Samaria after a long journey and sat down at Jacob’s well, he probably could have gone for two glasses of water. But when he asked the Samaritan woman for some water, he was taking advantage of an opportunity to share God’s Word - an opportunity far more important than a mere glass of water.
He asked her if she wanted living water, so that she would never be thirsty again. That probably sounded good to her. It would be one less chore she would have to do during the day. But, of course, Jesus meant spiritual water, the water of His Word that could last longer that a glass of water between chores, and longer that Jacob’s well. This water would give her eternal life.
Drink from God’s well the next time you have nothing to do, are waiting for somebody or need encouragement or a pick-me-up. You won’t just have something to do; you will be gaining eternal life.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: What did the Samaritan woman think Jesus meant by never being thirsty again? What should we do to get living water? Why did Jesus use all of this picture language in his conversation?
PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Ask God to help us understand His Word when we’re drinking from His well. Ask Him to help keep our faith strong when we are faced with trials. Ask God for words that will make unbelievers curious to learn more as we witness to them.
