Clothe Yourself
READ: Colossians 3:12-17
Billy loves the holiday season. He gets to help decorate the outside of the house with lights and candy canes, and the tree with ornaments and garland. Billy’s favorite thing to do, however, is help his mom make cookies. She always tells him not to eat too many, but this year he didn’t listen. Billy ate so many that he felt sick.
We shouldn’t indulge in sin like Billy indulged in cookies; rather we should strive to fill our lives with Christian virtues. Scripture says, “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” We shouldn’t do this only because God tells us to, but also because we’ve been made holy and are dearly loved.
The most important virtue to put on is love. It binds these virtues together in perfect unity. Love cannot be grasped by an unbeliever, but overflows in a believer’s heart. Believers whose hearts are filled with love will know the Savior’s peace, and it will rule in their hearts. Forgiveness and thanks are two other important Christian virtues. We pray in the Lord’s Prayer, “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” God wants us to forgive others, as He forgave us. In addition, our thanks towards God should be present in our lives, and whatever we do should give thanks and glory to God.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: Why do Christians indulge in sinful things, even if they know it’s wrong? What are some things that you have indulged in? How can you show thank to God?
PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Pray for God’s help in resisting temptations. Pray for the strength to have more Christian virtues present in your life, and pray that you can show more thanks to God for His blessings.
