Wealth
READ: Matthew 6:19-21
The harsh winter wind was sharp and cold. Kim turned up the collar on her coat and shuddered. “Someday,” she thought to herself, “My coat will be mink and my chauffeur will pick me up in my limo. I will be driven to my estate where my servants will wait on me for my every need.”
Sometimes I find myself thinking like this. I’m sure you have too. Perhaps you have seen the bumper sticker that reads, “Whoever dies with the most toys wins.” We should not be concerned with our earthly possessions, for God will take care of us. We should be more concerned about our spiritual welfare. Think of the story of the rich and poor man. The rich man had all the earthly possessions he wanted, yet he lacked faith. The poor man had no earthly things, yet he ended up in heaven because of his faith.
Maybe you’re wondering if it’s wrong to acquire many possessions. As you read before, there were many wealthy people in the Bible. The difficulty lies not in owning things, but trusting in them rather than Jesus.
We know that only Jesus Christ can bring happiness into our life. We also know that we are not perfect; we haven’t kept God’s law. Because God loves us so much, He sent His only Son into the world to take away our sins. One day we can go to live with Him and share in His great wealth, which is greater than anything here on earth. These things will not rot or fade away. The wealth of God’s blessings will last forever!
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: Of all the things you own (clothes, toys, money, and other things) which would be the most difficult for you to give up? What could you give up for Jesus? What should you give up?
PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Thank God that you don’t have to trust in things for your salvation. Also, thank Him that you will one day live with Him eternally. Ask Him to help you not to rely on material possessions for satisfaction. Ask for power to act if you should change some things in your life.
