Pure Blood

READ: Isaiah 52:13 - 53:12

One day you hear a newscast saying 40,000 people died yesterday from a deadly outbreak in Africa of an extremely contagious “mystery flu.”  Two days later it is everywhere.  Everyone is frantically looking for a cure, but nothing is working.  Suddenly, you hear that a vaccine can be made with pure blood from an uninfected person.  You and your family rush to the hospital to be tested.  You’re waiting anxiously when a doctor comes running out, excitedly yelling your son’s name.  He’s the only one with pure, uninfected blood and they hand you a consent form.  You start signing, then you notice the number of pints they need is blank.  You look questioningly at the doctor.  His smile fades.  “Because he is so young, we’re going to need it all–but we’re talking about saving the whole world here.  Please sign it.”

Could you do it?  God sent His only Son who shed His pure and holy blood because we were infected with sin.  Think of Jesus, who had to leave heaven to come to earth to suffer and die to save us.  Isaiah 53 tells us, “...the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His wounds we are healed.”  Think about how much God loves you and the tremendous sacrifice he made to save us.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: How would it feel to sacrifice your child?  How do you think Jesus felt?  How can we thank God for His sacrifice?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Ask God to help us appreciate His sacrifice.  Ask God to spread His news of salvation to others.  Thank God for sending Jesus.
