Possessions

READ: Luke 12:13-21

"Where did all my money go?" Andrew thought to himself Sunday morning as he sat looking at his offering envelope. To answer that question, he thought back to the previous day. He had $45 at the beginning of the night. After dinner he had only $30 left. Then he had gone to Fun World and spent over $15 on video games. Than he went to the movies and spent the remainder of his money. He was really impressing his friends with how much money he had. Now Andrew felt badly that he had no money to give to his God.

God tells us in Luke 12:15, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." How often don't we, like Andrew, try to save money to buy big things that will impress the world around us. Not only do we spend all our money on material things, we spend our money on things that we don't even have proof of spending it on, like movies, food, and festivals.

The only reason we spent it on that was to impress friends. God wants us to have fun in our lives here on earth, but He also warns us not to get greedy and forget about Him. All the earthly things that we have here on earth will never help with what matters—getting us into heaven.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: What are some examples of what can be considered worthless, earthly goods? How often do you spend your money on those things? What would be good ways to spend your money?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Pray that God will help you to spend your money wisely. Pray that others will learn the correct way to spend money and not get so caught up in earthly things that they forget about God. Praise God that He has provided so many riches in your life.
