Lessons from Passover - Sons and Daughters of the King

How can you tell someone is important?

Our world looks for external signs to tell how important someone is. Is there a big ring and jewelry? Are the clothes expensive? Has the hair been done up special?  Is there a limo in the driveway? The world would say that anyone who rides to work in a limo every day is important.

When God's people celebrated the Passover meal, several things symbolized the importance of the occasion. They always wore the very finest clothes that they owned. The table was arranged for royalty. They did not sit up to a table the way we do. but reclined on their sides, resting their elbows on cushions. Everyone in the family participated in the meal, which could mean as many as 10 or 20 family members and friends. Servants were always excused to be with their own families. That explains why there was no one to wash the disciples' feet. Jesus set the example for royal sons and daughters when he washed everyone's feet.

In each home the customs, the clothes, the cushions said, "We are the sons and daughters of the King of the universe. We are free and are not slaves." Saint Paul tells us, "If you belong to Christ, then yon are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise" (Galatians 3:29).

Every Christian is a child of the promise. What is God's is ours through Jesus. He lives with us now, and we are going to live with him in heaven. We are the sons and daughters of the King of the universe. Our relationship with him sets us free to serve others in love.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: How do we show others that we are the sons and daughters of God?

PRAYER SUGGESTION: Pray that Christians will recognize serving as a privilege. Ask God to help us all serve others out of love for our Lord Jesus.

Heavenly Father, King of the universe, thank you for making us your children and bringing us to faith in yon through your Word and the work of the Holy Spirit Make us humble for works of service in your kingdom. Amen.
