Trusting in our Lord Jesus

READ: 1 Kings 17-20

Has anyone ever said to you, “Trust me, everything will be fine.”  I’m sure you've heard this many times.  Having complete faith in someone is not something that comes without first giving the matter considerable thought.  For a lot of people, putting their trust in someone is not a very easy thing to do.  Others are sometimes too trusting and end up hurt or disappointed with the results.  As sinners, it is hard for us to have faith in someone because we are naturally suspicious of everything we come by.

The only person that will always be there for us, and someone we can put all of our faith in, is Jesus Christ.  Elijah gives us examples of incredible faith and also lack of faith in God as written in these chapters from 1 Kings.  In this text Elijah was told to go to a ravine, and God would supply him with food that would be brought by ravens every day.  Elijah trusted the Word of the Lord, a trust that we all should strive to mirror.  He knew God was watching over him every day and would take care of him.  Elijah said in 1 Kings 18:36, “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.”

Elijah didn't always demonstrate such trust.  When threatened again by evil queen Jezebel, we read in 1 Kings 19:3 "Elijah was and ran for his life."  Certainly God would continue to protect Elijah, but Elijah wasn't so sure.  He even asked God to take his life, because he didn't sense that the work he was doing was having any success.  However, even in this moment of weakness, complaint and fear, God lovingly reassured Elijah and strengthened him to resume the work he was called to do.

We can learn a lot from these chapters - how God provides for us in extraordinary ways and how he lovingly calls us to repentance when we stumble.  Trust Jesus - everything is already fine!

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: What are some things we can do as Christians to strengthen our faith in Jesus?  Have you ever been in any situations where you might have lacked trust in Jesus?  Why do we sometimes lack faith during difficult times?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Ask God to help strengthen our faith in Him.  Thank God for always being there for us when we needed Him the most.  Pray that we may always have complete faith in Jesus no matter what the situation.
