Reconciled through Christ

READ: Colossians 1:21-29
Most of you reading this are probably familiar with the song "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." For the most part, this song focuses on taking the troubles of our earthly lives - trials, troubles, sorrow, weakness, broken relationships. These things come from many directions in the world around us - the harsh words of others, the ailments of the physical body, the stresses of the daily grind.
This section of God's Word reminds us, however, of the trouble that comes from within ourselves. Because of our sins, we are enemies of God in our minds. Paul says we are alienated from God. But then he shares the greatest aspect of Jesus' friendship to us, far greater than his help in dealing with our earthly, outward troubles. Paul says, "But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation" What an incredible gift! Jesus has restored us, made us right in his Father's sight, as a free gift by taking our place for the punishment of our sin.
Surely God takes care of our earthly needs, and for that we are thankful. But what a wonderful truth that God has taken care of a far greater need, our spiritual need, and rescued us from the punishment our sins deserve. And so, we live for Him by His power, because of all he has done for us.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: The word "alienate" occurs rarely in the NIV Bible. Why do you think that is? What does it mean to be a "servant of the Gospel?"
THINGS TO PRAY ABOUT: Thank God for doing everything necessary to restore us to Himself. Thank Him for the ways in which he daily protects, provides, and comforts you. Ask for a rich measure of His Holy Spirit to guide you and sustain you in faith all your life.
