Jet Lag

READ: Isaiah 40

When you’re on a long trip, do you ever get to a point where you feel as if you could sleep for about a week?  When I’m traveling, if I don’t remember to get enough fluids and take time for a few naps, I start getting really bad jet lag. All the changes in time zones and the hectic pace of catching the next flight leave my system crying for the normalcy of home. The captive Israelites in Babylon desired the normal life they once had enjoyed in their homeland. Isaiah reminded them in his prophecy that God would provide the strength needed to get through the remaining years of their captivity. Isaiah told them, “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak” (Isaiah 40:29).

What a comfort to know that it’s not up to us. The strength and power we need to keep on keeping on come from God. We don’t have to worry that we won’t have the energy resources to get through the exile of this life on earth. God builds up our faith in Jesus’ promise of salvation. And faith is the spiritual strength we need to carry on.

When we get that feeling of jet lag just going about our daily routines, we need to take time out in God’s Word and refresh our weary spirits. The words of Isaiah and the other writers of Scripture build us up and equip us once again to carry on until the return of the King.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: How often do you refuel on God's Word?  What are some other passages like the one above that comfort you in times of stress and weariness?

THINGS TO PRAY ABOUT:  Ask God for the patience and strength to endure all things - good and bad - and to glorify Him always!
