Can We Count On Love?

READ1 John 3:1-2

“I love you.” So often we hear these words spoken. But what do they really mean? Boyfriends and girlfriends speak these words to one another, but often these young couples break up. Children sometimes say, “I love this toy,” but toys get broken or are  grown tired of. Husbands and wives speak these words to one another often, but sometimes you may be tempted to wonder how meaningful words like these are when so many marriages end in divorce. Can we count on the word “love” anymore?

Yes, we can, as we consider what God says to us. “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called Children of God.” Parents love their children, but we can’t even comprehend how much God loved and still loves us. Indeed, He loved us so much that He sent His only Son into a world that rejected Him and finally killed Him. If that isn’t love in the fullest, I don’t know what is. Because of Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection, we have the privilege of being God’s children, perfect in His eyes. His love for us goes beyond our every thought.

The next time you say or hear the words, “I love you,” ponder God’s great love for us and our privilege to be called Children of God.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:  Has someone you love ever failed you? Have you failed someone you love? How can you change that?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Thank God for making you His Child. Ask God to make your love more evident in the lives of others.
