Our King Rules Over All

READ: John 18:33-37

The concept of a king is foreign to our culture.  In a few countries which have a monarchy, like the United Kingdom, the king or queen is merely a figurehead.  Their position has little or no power, but it is very impressive.  Wherever the king or queen travels, there is much pomp and circumstance.

I suppose we could say that the people greeted Jesus on Palm Sunday with a certain degree of pop and circumstance: crowds, palm branches, cloaks, and shouts of praises.  “Blessed is the King of Israel.”

Later in the week Jesus was brought before Pilate who asked Jesus if he was a king.  Jesus answered, “You are right in saying that I am a king…but my kingdom is not of this world.”

Jesus rules over all people who have lived and ever will live. As Paul explains, “God raised Jesus from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realm, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.  And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be the head over everything for the church.”

It takes faith to see Jesus as King over all.  It takes faith to see this power resting in Jesus as He rides humbly into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey.  It takes faith to see this authority in Jesus as He hangs suspended on a cross.  It’s true, however, whether we believe it or not, that Jesus is, “King of kings and Lord of lords.”

His rule extends all around the world in the hearts of those who trust Him as their Savior.  He has no need for weapons of war in His kingdom.  The only weapon needed is the Word of God.  Through the Gospel of Peace, Jesus brings sinners to faith and extends His rule.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:  How can the world understand the rule of Christ?  How can we teach others about God’s rule for the world?  In what ways can we as Christians tell others about Christ our Ruler?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS:  Thank God for bringing us into the Kingdom of His Son.  Ask God for faith to always put our trust in Him.
