Think Before You Speak

READ: Genesis 11:1-9
Often times I have spent weekends sitting in my room. Not because I have no where to go, but because I have one major flaw. This terrible flaw I possess often lands me in a heap of trouble with my parents. I will think I know more than they do, but I am promptly told differently. So, because of my smart mouth, I frequently end up sitting in my room on a Saturday night. If I would only keep my mouth shut and think before I speak, I wouldn’t be in this predicament. When will I learn?
But, I am not the only one who has had this problem. Remember the Tower of Babel? Genesis 11:4 shows that people in biblical times couldn’t keep their mouths shut either and they wanted to “make a name for themselves.” This eventually ended in God’s disciplining them for thinking they knew better than God.
This passage reminds us to think before we speak and act. Failing to think first can lead to serious consequences.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: When is the last time you did not think before you spoke? What were the consequences? How would you do things differently?
PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Thank God for setting an example for us to follow. Ask God for patience and the ability to grin and bear it. Praise God for His forgiveness, understanding and ever-present grace.
