God is Number One

READ: Matthew 10:34-42
Have you ever had to choose between two things and leave behind the one that you didn’t choose? Maybe you had to choose between friends or possessions. Well, what if you had to choose between earth and heaven?
Matthew 10:34-42 talks about how you have to put God above everything and show your faith in your actions, for you will be rewarded. “Anyone who loves father or mother more than me, is not worthy of me…if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple…he will certainly not lose his reward.” We may love earthly things and our family, but if we truly do love God, we would put Him above all else. Our actions and the way we treat others show this kind of devotion. Christians act according to Christ’s standards, not worldly standards.
Some of us may love God, but not be spiritually ready to put everything below Christ and give everything up for Him. However, the reward is great and glorious when we show our thanks in this way. Our Lord died for us so we wouldn’t be condemned to eternal life in hell. That’s the greatest gift anyone could have ever given us.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: Why should we not be afraid to give everything up for God and serve Him? What have you done today to be God’s disciple? In what ways are Christ’s and the world’s standards different?
PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Pray for those who may not be spiritually ready to give everything up for God. Ask Him to strengthen our faith so we can be good disciples. Thank God for all that He had done for us and given us.
