The Comfort of God

READ: Psalm 13
Hopeless. Helpless. Alone. Can you think of times in your life when you may have felt like this? Perhaps when a good friend moves away? Maybe your family has been split because of divorce. Or when you lost a job? Maybe you’ve felt this way when a loved one dies.
While David’s enemy was probably an invading country, we face the enemies of disappointment, pain, fear, unfairness, uncertainty, worry, sin and Satan himself every day. In our weakness, anguish, and failure, we may cry out “How long, O Lord?” Our thoughts plague us, our hearts are heavy with sorrow, and we may question God’s very existence. We might feel like we’re not going to make it.
When David reached that point, he remembered the truth, the precious promises of God. “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, for he has been good to me.” We have a God who knows our needs, who is concerned for our welfare. We have a Savior, Jesus, who came to live with us and experienced all the same feelings and temptations we do, yet was without sin. It is in his death and resurrection that we find unfailing love, salvation, and goodness. He helps us in our need; he forgives us for our sins.
Whatever you have experienced or may be experiencing, rejoice and sing to the Lord. He has been good to you; he loves you deeply and richly; he has saved you from eternal punishment and will work all things for your good.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: Why does God allow trial into our lives? What’s more important: how you feel or what you believe? In what ways has God been good to you recently?
THINGS TO PRAY ABOUT: Thank God for his unfailing love and the gift of salvation through faith in Jesus. Ask for patience when enduring hard times. Ask God for the strength to fully trust his perfect will.
