Best Friend

READ: Psalm 16
Do you have a best friend? Someone you can tell anything to, someone you can always count on, someone who knows and meets your every need? Most of us can probably name a person or two who meet, or at least come close, to fulfilling this description of a best friend: always dependable, always trustworthy, honest, kind and caring, generous.
Chances are, however, that no matter how great your best friend seems to be, there have been times when that friend has let you down. Maybe it was a phone call that was never returned. Maybe it was a promise that slipped through the cracks. Maybe it was a secret that was accidentally shared. As you consider your closest friends, you have to admit, none of them are the perfect friend.
Thankfully, we do have a perfect friend in our Savior Jesus. Look at all he does for us! He makes our lot, our life and future, secure (vs. 5). He has given us a delightful inheritance, namely life eternal (vs. 6). He counsels us, even while we sleep (vs. 7)! He promises to be with us and protect us (vs. 8). As he raised the Holy One, our Savior Jesus, from the dead, so also he will raise us who believe from the dead (vs. 10). In his grace and mercy, he has revealed to us the path to eternal life through faith in Jesus in His Word, and will bless us with eternal joy and pleasure in heaven (vs. 11).
WOW! What a friend we have in Jesus, what blessing, what hope! No friend on earth could ever give us so much. While we are thankful for our earthly friends, thank God for our closest and best friend, Jesus. In Him and through Him, we have all we’ll ever need!
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: Why is it important to take refuge in God? What would life be like without God? Everything God gives us is a gift – how can you share those gifts with others in your daily life?
THINGS TO PRAY ABOUT: Ask God to forgive you for the times you looked to earthly things or to yourself instead of to God. Ask God to fill you with joyful worship and service in response to His great love. Thank God for the blessings he gives you daily and has promised to give you one day in Heaven.
