A Lesson in Humility

READ: Hebrews 2:10-18
Mike had received a huge inheritance from a distant relative. However, when Mike received these riches, he learned that his best friend, Scott, had a life-threatening illness. Scott didn’t have much money and couldn’t afford to pay all of his hospital bills. So, Mike decided to support his friend by paying for all of his bills.
This reminds us of Jesus’ purpose when He came down to earth on that first Christmas. He gave up all of His divine, heavenly glory and riches just to save us from death and the power of the devil.
The only way that Jesus could save us from eternal damnation was to become human, with flesh and blood. He then died on the cross as our sacrificial lamb, redeeming us from hell. As Hebrews 2:14-15 says, “Since (God’s) children have flesh and blood, Jesus too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.”
When Mike received his inheritance, he did not have to pay his friend’s debt. But Mike decided to gave his money generously out of his heart. In the same way, Jesus did not have to set aside His divine glory and heaven to save us from death. But, out of Jesus’ boundless love and mercy, he came down to earth and forgave the sins of all people, granting us eternal life through faith.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: What would you have done if you were in Mike’s situation? In what ways have you been humbled in your life? What was your reaction in those trying times?
PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Thank God that He sent His Son Jesus to earth to make atonement for our sins. Ask God for strength during the times that you are humbled. Pray to God that He grants you the opportunity to witness His Word to people that are facing problems in their life.
