Valuable Possessions

READ: Psalm 19:7-11
What’s your most valuable possession? Is it a piece of jewelry? Perhaps an I-pod or cell phone? Maybe it’s something less tangible, like a talent for playing sports or music. Is it your car, which provides you with some freedom? Or maybe it’s your ability to earn good grades, or speak well, or the like.
In today’s verses, David describes something as more precious than pure gold. He says that it revives his soul, brings joy to his heart, and gives light to his eyes. From the description, it seems that what David is referring to is his most valuable possession. But it wasn’t the plunder of enemies, or the wealth of his kingdom, or even his family. Indeed it was no earthly pleasure or product – it was the Word of God. The laws, precepts and commands David refers to here are not only the Commandments which show us our sinfulness, but also the promises of God which point to the Savior. David found joy and light in the promise that the Savior of the world was yet to come, and that Jesus’ perfect life, innocent death and resurrection would assure David a place in heaven.
The Word of God, the Bible, should be our most valuable possession, too. In it we see the dreadfulness of our sinful condition, as well as the full and free atonement found in Jesus. We also receive power and guidance from God to remain in the faith until life’s end and to carry out his will in our lives.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: How often do you read/study the Bible? Why is it important to do this regularly? How can studying with others be beneficial?
THINGS TO PRAY ABOUT: Ask God for wisdom and patience as you read his Word and learn from it. Encourage family and friends to regularly study God’s Word.
