READ: Psalm 20

What’s in a name?  Perhaps you’ve heard that question asked before.  In the world of products and advertising, what’s in the name is pretty important to the success and appeal of the product.  When it comes to people, their name often signifies something – the ongoing legacy of a family member, a special talent, a characteristic or attribute, and the like.

What’s in God’s name?  Psalm 20 points to several things that we find in God’s name: answer in distress, protection, help and support, desires granted and successful plans, answered requests and great power.  Because of the great riches and blessings we receive in God’s name, we “shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name” (Deuteronomy 5:11).  And God also tells us, “I am the LORD; that is my name!  I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols” (Isaiah 42:8)

In today’s world, the name of the LORD is misused again and again, called upon needlessly in conversation, used as an exclamation of emotion, or even to carelessly curse and swear.  When one understands what’s in God’s name, there certainly is NO reason to be using God’s name in such ways.  God wants us to call on his name as his dear children, richly loved and yearning for forgiveness, guidance, and blessing.  The next time you read Psalm 20, be reminded of the greatness of the name of the LORD, give thanks for all which he gives you, and praise his holy name boldly!

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:  How often do you hear God’s name being used inappropriately?  How can you use God’s name more appropriately in your daily life?

THINGS TO PRAY ABOUT:  Ask God for forgiveness when you misuse his name.  Ask Him for help in using his name appropriately and often, as he loves to hear from his children!
