Did You Lose Something?

READ: Luke 15:1-10

Have you ever lost something dear to you?  Maybe it was a sock, a set of keys, a calculator, money, or another item you wanted or needed to have.  What did you do?  You probably searched relentlessly until you found what you lost.

In Luke 15, Jesus also describes something He had lost.  In verses 1-10, Jesus told the Parable of the Lost Sheep and the Parable of the Lost Coin.  In each of these parables, Jesus described a person losing one item.  Even though they had many of that one particular item, they searched relentlessly until they found what they had lost.  When they had found what they lost, they called friends and neighbors to rejoice about it.

When sin entered the world, our perfect relationship with God was lost.  God's righteousness demanded punishment for sin, and the one sin of Adam and Eve infected every human being with sin.  However, God's love prompted him to restore the relationship.  In Genesis 3:15, He promised to send a Savior to pay for our sins.  And now that Savior, Jesus, searches relentlessly for the lost sheep of humanity.  We are the precious coin, lost to sin, that he searches for without giving up.  Jesus calls to us in his Word and promises forgiveness and life eternal.

It is wonderful to know that there is someone that cares for us that much and wants us to be with Him.  Thank God for bringing us to faith in the truth of God’s grace and love for us.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: How are we like the lost coin and lost sheep?  How does God’s plan affect the world?  How do you feel knowing that Jesus paid for your sins?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Thank the Lord for delivering His plan of salvation for us.  Thank Jesus for searching for us.  Pray for others to come to know God’s grace and salvation.
