God's Safety Instructions

READ: Isaiah 13:6-9

Have you ever flown? Do you listen to the flight attendant’s instructions? Researchers tell us that most travelers ignore preflight safety instructions. Though the attendant is doing them a favor, their nose is buried in a book or a newspaper. They prepare for a cat nap, or converse with those sitting around them. If the plane they are riding had trouble, they wouldn’t know what to do.

God has done the same. He continually cautioned his chosen people through his prophets that reckless sin and hard heartedness had consequences. And yet, when his judgment appeared, Israel and Judah didn’t know what to make of what was happening.

Sadly, God’s people refused to believe Isaiah’s warnings about the judgment that the Babylonians would one day bring. Many still refuse to listen.

Sin is serious business. There will be a day of judgment. This judgment will be marked by two accomplishments:

  • Life is a highstakes mission. Those who do not trust in the Lion of Judah will pay a terrible price.
  • God’s grace will be revealed. Those who trust in the blood of the Lamb will receive an undeserved reward.

Get ready. Be in the Word. Pray to the Lord of heaven. Take Lord’s supper frequently. Make no mistake about it, this plane won’t fly forever.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT:  In what ways have you not listened to God's Word?  In what ways can you better listen to God's Word?

PRAYER SUGGESTION: Dear Lord, don’t let the world, my sinful nature, or the devil ever draw me away from you Word. Send you Holy Spirit to my heart that I might always be ready for the day that you will call me to eternal life. In Jesus my Savior’s name I pray. Amen.
