Working Good

Romans 8:28 - And we know in all things, God works for the good of those who love him who have been called according to his purpose.”

Recently, I was cut from the JV basketball team.  It was a big deal because I loved playing basketball and spent almost every day practicing and working on my ball handling and shooting skills.  I had been playing competitively and taking every chance to play for years.  When I was cut, I questioned God, because I loved playing and didn’t know what to do with all the time I had devoted to basketball.

This situation in my life reminded me of the situation and questions the Disciples had when Jesus was taken away in the garden of Gethsemane.  They had no idea what was happening, and they were so afraid that they fled.   Throughout the next two days they were in absolute agony because their teacher and master had been taken from them.  On Sunday morning, however, they found out God’s real plan.  Jesus had risen from the dead and come out victorious over sin.

I can be assured that because God triumphed over my biggest problems of sin and eternal death, God will also help me in this moment.  By his promise in this passage, He has another plan for me, which is very comforting to me when I am questioning why things are happening to me.  We know that all things will work out for our good and God has a purpose for us in life - and has chosen us to live eternally with him in heaven.

Have you ever questioned if God has a plan for your life? “God works for the good of those who love him.” You, too, can know that God has a plan for you and he will work it all out for good.

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: Why is it so difficult to trust that God works out all things for good?  What do you think was going on in the Disciple’s minds? When we doubt where do we find the confidence that God will keep his promise?

PRAYER SUGGESTION: Dear Father, we know that we will all have problems, please help us to turn to you and trust that you have a better plan for our lives.  Thank you for sending your son to give us the best present of all, himself. Amen.
