READ: Genesis 12:1-8
Jeremy and his twin sister Cassy were happily entering their junior year in high school. They were content with where they lived and eagerly anticipating the new school year. One day they had just gotten home from one of their friends pool parties when their dad told them he had some bad news to share with them in the living room. He gathered them around the table and said, “Kids, I have just received a job transfer. We need to leave this house and move across the country to New York.” Jeremy and Cassy could not believe their ears! They both got up and ran out of the room. Cassy was crying when Jeremy came in her room later. “I can’t believe we have to leave our friends and our school. This just isn’t fair!” Jeremy told her that he couldn’t believe it either, but since their father’s mind was set, there was nothing they could do about it. They went downstairs to talk to him about the details and he told them to sit down, he had something to read to them. He read them Genesis 12:1-8. This story told of Abraham packing up his family and all of his possessions and moving to the land where the Lord told him to go. Abraham had to leave behind all of his friends and relatives and everything he had ever known all of his life and move to a whole new world. The Lord told Abraham, “I will bless you and make you into a great nation.” Cassy’s father said that even though they had to move, they would always have the Lord with them and they should trust in what he had planned for them.
There will be times when life seems to be completely uprooted, the sense of security and familiarity shaken considerably. But God's promises are just as good in those times as they are when things comfortable. In fact, its in times of change that God's promise never to change becomes so important! He promises to love us, to forgive us, to be with us, and to bring us safely home to heaven. As Jesus himself said, "Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: What Bible verses can Jeremy and Cassy read over in their distress? Why is it important that they support their father and trust their Heavenly Father?
PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: In order to follow the Lord, pray for a faith that trusts Him. Pray for faith that overcomes doubt. Ask God to help, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)
