The Trap

Obadiah 7 - All your allies will force you to the border; your friends will deceive and overpower you; those who eat your bread will set a trap for you, but you will not detect it.

What kind of friends do you have? Are they the sort who lead to closer to Jesus, or farther away from him? In our text, God’s judgment on the sinning nation of Edom was that Edom’s allies would be in on the kill when Edom fell. That’s the final result for those who reject Jesus: There is no hope for them. They may think they have a friend in Jesus, but if they keep turning away from him, they’ve got a shock coming. Jesus himself will judge them. Jesus himself will overpower them.

Jesus tells us to come to him when we’re overwhelmed with our sins. We come to him and lay them down before him, and he assures us: He has forgiven us. When the last day comes, Jesus is the friend who will rescue us, bring us to heaven, and set us next to him to eat and drink and live forever. He is the Creator. He is the Redeemer. He is our Savior.

Give thanks to him... who spread out the earth upon the waters,
His love endures forever.
(Psalm 136:6)

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT: How is what your friends do partly your responsibility?  How is it not your responsibility?

PRAYER SUGGESTIONS: Thank God that he sent Jesus, the friend of sinners, to take away all your sins.  Ask God to provide you with good friends, and to enable you to be a good example for all the people around you, too.
