The Perfect Cornerstone
By Josh
I attended a few Real Opportunities for Christian Kids (ROCK) meetings a few years ago. I recall at one of them we were talking about Christ as the cornerstone. We split into small groups and I ended up in a group where only a few people talked about the passage or answered any questions. Our group leader was noticeably frustrated and so I hesitantly raised my hand. I remember saying something along these lines: “I’ve always thought of Jesus as being a keystone, the keystone, in a doorway or an archway. All the bricks that make up the rest of the archway are the people in the world. Without Jesus, the whole world comes crashing down.” Now, I was always a quiet person and my friends who were in my group just stared at me as if I’d grown a mustache and beard. The leader was stunned, it seemed, and we continued on, with the others occasionally pitching in.
This was, as I said, a few years ago. A lot can change in few years. I know I did. I recently started high school, became one of the leaders of a creative ministries group at our church, and was confirmed. To be completely honest, I underwent a much-needed spiritual makeover.
I now realize that my initial thoughts about that passage were wrong.
Christ Jesus wasn’t always the keystone. He was “the stone the builders rejected”, who became the keystone. God the Father sent Him to become the keystone. When He died, He fell from that position and crushed the head of Satan. When He rose and ascended to be at His Father’s right hand, He was put back into his rightful place.
Let’s go back to our archway picture. The keystone isn’t the only thing that holds the archway together. The sticky substance in between the bricks holds them together as well.
As I said, I am a freshman in high school. Many of my friends are there, but my best friends are not. We still are very close, even if we don’t see each other often.
Christ is that sticky stuff that binds us all together in the faith. He sticks to us like glue, even if we can’t see him. He is the perfect friend, one who we can count on to stick close to us.
He is the perfect Savior.
He is our perfect cornerstone.
