Through the Gates

By Keegan

Angel“Angels  in the choir, you’ll be leaving soon. Make sure you’re ready.” God’s voice echoed throughout all of heaven. “You will meet the shepherds in the fields outside of Bethlehem. Oh, and please try not to seem too threatening.”

It’s hard to describe Gods’ voice, it’s something you never really get used to. I guess humans might understand if I say that it’s like James Earl Jones’ voice, only 100 times louder and more impressive.

Oh, I’m sorry, I forgot t introduce myself. My name is Darius; I’m an angel. I’m in the choir and I’m a messenger. Today is a very important day here in Heaven and on Earth. Easily one of the top ten days ever. Today is the first Christmas.! And I get to play a part in it! I am so excited, but I think just about everyone here in Heaven is, even God. But if He is, He’s hiding it very well. He seems to be very calm and laid back (a big contrast to the rest of Heaven right now), but then again, He always seems to be calm and laid back. But I think He’s excited, it’s hard not to be, there’s a feeling of excitement everywhere. But there’s also a feeling of nervousness.

“OK everyone,” Gods voice came through again. “It’s show time.”

All of the angels in the choir were gathering at the gate. And, in case you were wondering, I meant the gates of Heaven, the Pearly Gates. They are the most magnificent things you’ll ever walk (or fly) through. They are a pearl color with gold trim along all the edges. But then again, all of Heaven is magnificent.

When the whole choir was there, God said, “OK everyone, you need to go now. Oh, and don’t forget to get high on that C sharp, I know you all have trouble with it in rehearsal. So go. And may I be with you.” And with that we all spread our wings and took off. The closer I got to the gates the faster I flew. I love flying through them, and you’ll soon find out why.  I was close; I sped up and was now ahead of everyone. I closed my eyes and felt myself speed up faster than my wings alone could take me. This increased until I was going too fast to open my eyes again. Then, all-of-a-sudden, I stopped. I opened my eyes and found myself above a field full of sheep and about a half dozen shepherds. But they couldn’t see us, the shepherds that is. We were invisible to them, but the sheep could see us. We only make ourselves invisible to humans, but not animals. We let them see us.

All the angels got into their positions, mine was towards the middle in the very front, so I had a great view. The shepherds all looked bored. But then, simultaneously, we all became visible to them. They didn’t look bored anymore! They looked afraid, just like God said they would. So the choir director, Nathaniel, told them to not be afraid, and about baby Jesus in Bethlehem. When he had finished, he gave us our cue, and we sang. And to be honest, we sounded, well, heavenly. We even all nailed the C sharp. And after a job well done, we all became invisible again. And soon we were all back in Heaven. we can’t get there ourselves, God has to bring us back. And speaking of Him...

Nativity Scene“Well done,” His voice boomed. “You were all wonderful, but if you want to see Him, you better hurry, the shepards are just now getting there.”  So we all took off again, and we all flew through the Pearly Gates again. This time we stopped in Bethlehem, in a little stable. And there He was, Jesus Christ. The Son of Man and Son of God. He seemed so young and innocent. But at the same time, I saw His Father in Him, and He seemed so strong, just, and glorious. But He was just all-around cute.

As I was looking at Him, I heard a voice. It was a girl, and it seemed familiar.

“Darius, Darius. Darius, wake up Darius.” I opened my eyes and saw my teacher, Mrs. Fox, standing there.

She said, “Darius, you fell asleep during grammar again. Did you know you sleep talk? You kept saying ‘Peace on earth and goodwill towards men,’ and ‘Like James Earl Jones.’ I didn’t wake you up because it was so funny.”

I felt really embarrassed, I had been dreaming about being an angel at the first Christmas again. Oh well, at least I know I don’t have to be dreaming to have Jesus here with me. So I forgot all about everyone else. I closed my eyes and felt the rush of  flying through the gates of Heaven, and once again, I felt like I had wings.
