Is There Anyone Out There for Me?

By Nicole (Written when she was a single, unmarried college student.  She is now married with children.)

SearchingImagine a short, uncoordinated, shy high school girl who never had a boy ask her out.

Then imagine a relaxed, upbeat, self-assured college girl who was asked out by a cute, popular boy.

Now imagine that both girls were the same person - me.

The "transformation"

So, what happened? I can tell you what didn't happen: I didn't grow six inches or become graceful. I was still the same five-foot tall girl on the outside. But, on the inside, I realized that I needed to just be me. That gave me confidence and a positive attitude. In addition, knowing that God was on my side brought me comfort and hope.

Before long, I had a great group of college friends that I was comfortable around. And, best of all, I could just be myself around them.

The moment

That's when it happened. This great guy that I went to college with started hanging around and talking to me. Soon we were talking for hours every night.

I never felt I had to be someone I wasn't with him. Sure, I was nervous at first, but so was he! That didn't stop us from sharing our deepest feelings with each other. It also didn't matter that the clothes I wore weren't from the Gap and that I got good grades. Or, that he was athletic and I was an uncoordinated mess. In fact, he didn't really care that I hardly ever wore makeup. Likewise, I didn't mind that he wore a baseball hat on his head three days out of four and was late for everything (including our first date).

After being together five years, we can still talk and talk for hours. (Okay, I might be the one talking, but he's a great listener!). And, I still hardly ever wear makeup, but that doesn't bother him because he's still wearing his baseball hat!

The meaning

What does it all mean? Well, I found that there is someone out there for me.

Is there someone out there for you? I don't know, but I do know that God knows and that he has something wonderful planned for you. ("Yeah, yeah," you say, rolling your eyes). But it's true. 1 Corinthians 2:9 says, "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him."

My high school mind certainly didn't think I'd one day find someone as great as the person God sent into my life. And, the same thing applies to you. You can't imagine now the great twists and turns that God has planned for you, but if you remember his promises, you should enjoy the ride!
